5 Helpful Items for First Time Moms

Bringing a new baby home is an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming with the sheer number of products available. While some items are essential, others are just really nice to have, making life with a newborn a bit more convenient. Here are a few baby items that I found incredibly helpful as a sleep deprived first mom:

1. Swaddles

Swaddles were an absolute godsend during those midnight diaper changes. My baby, Little B, loved being swaddled, and it helped her sleep better. However, as she became more active, wrapping her in a traditional swaddle blanket became a challenge. That’s when zippered swaddles came to the rescue. These were so much easier for dressing and changing, especially the ones with dual zip options. They saved me time and sanity during those late-night sessions. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of zippers, no velcro and definitely no snaps! Your sleep deprived brain will thank me later.

2. Baby Monitor

As a stay-at-home mom, I didn’t use a baby monitor all the time since Little B slept in our room for the first year. However, it was a lifesaver when she was napping or sleeping, allowing me to go outside, putter around, or sit on the porch without constantly worrying. It provided peace of mind and a bit of freedom to get some fresh air/space when my postpartum self desperately needed a break.

3. Baby Carrier

Not every baby loves being carried this way, and unfortunately, after a certain age my little bean didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped. However, many babies love being worn, and it’s a great way to keep them close while having your hands free. I wish I could have used it more because it can be incredibly convenient for both baby and parent.

4. Nursing Pillows

While you can prop your baby with other things, I absolutely loved my Boppy nursing pillow. It was a fantastic support for feeding Little B and was also great for floor time or propping her up when I needed to get things done. It is a versatile item that provided comfort and convenience and we used it well into Little B’s babyhood.

5. Stroller

Strollers are wonderful if you are on the go a lot or enjoy outdoor activities. However, you do not need one right away. It’s a good idea to get one when you’re ready to venture out more frequently. A stroller can make outings easier and more enjoyable for both you and your baby.

These items are not strictly necessary, but they can certainly make the early months a bit smoother. Every baby is different, so it is all about finding what works best for you and your little one.
