Top 10 Essential Oils I Use: A Personal Guide

Essential oils have always interested me and I have dabbled in using them throughout the years. Becoming a Mom encouraged me to research and find even more ways to use EOs, in an effort to reduce chemicals in our home. From relaxation to immune support, each oil brings its unique benefits. Here, I share my top 10 essential oils and how I incorporate them into my home and life.

1. Lavender

Lavender is the quintessential essential oil for relaxation and stress relief. Its calming scent helps me unwind after a long day. I often add a few drops to my diffuser in the evening to create a calming environment for Little B or mix it with a carrier oil for a soothing massage. Lavender is powerhouse oil and a must have for any oily girls cabinet!

2. Chamomile

Chamomile is another go-to for relaxation; it is also excellent for soothing irritated skin. It has a sweet, apple-like aroma that is incredibly soothing. I like to blend it with lavender in lotions and in Little B’s bubble bath, to promote a sense of calm before bedtime.

3. Thieves

Thieves oil is a unique blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary essential oils. Known for its immune-boosting properties, I use Thieves oil year-round, but especially during cold and flu season. I add it to my diffuser to purify the air and boost our immune systems and I make my own sanitizing spray with Thieves oil, distilled water and alcohol. I use this on my couches, rugs, soft toys and bedding to deodorize and sanitize without harsh chemicals.

4. Frankincense

Frankincense is revered for its spiritual and medicinal properties. It’s warm, woody scent is perfect for meditation and mindfulness practices. I often diffuse it at night along with my guided meditations to help with my insomnia, and its anti-inflammatory properties make it a staple in my skincare routine. A few drops in my facial moisturizer work wonders for my skin and smells amazing!

5. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil is my savior during allergy season or when we have colds in the house. Its fresh, invigorating scent helps clear nasal congestion and improve respiratory function. I often add a few drops to a bowl of hot water for steam inhalation or to my diffuser when I need to breathe easier.

6. Cedarwood

Cedarwood has a rich, earthy aroma that I find incredibly grounding. It’s great for promoting a restful sleep, I like to blend it with other relaxing oils to diffuse in the evenings. Cedarwood is also beneficial for hair and scalp health; I add a few drops to my shampoo to promote healthy hair growth and reduce dandruff.

7. Rosemary

Rosemary oil is known for its stimulating and refreshing properties. It’s great for enhancing concentration and memory. I diffuse rosemary oil in my home office to keep me focused and alert. Additionally, it is great for hair health, I add it to castor oil for a scalp treatment as well as blending with other oils for an eyelash serum.

8. Peppermint

Peppermint oil is incredibly versatile. It’s cool, invigorating scent is perfect for boosting energy and concentration. I use it in my diffuser when I need a little pick me up and add a drop to my tea to aid digestion. Peppermint is also excellent for relieving headaches and muscle pain; a diluted peppermint oil works wonders for tension relief. I am prone to tension headaches and some evenings I will rub some diluted peppermint oil in to my neck and shoulders to reduce all the tension I hold there.

9. Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is a powerhouse for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. I use it primarily for skin care, adding a few drops to my cleanser/ moisturizer to combat acne or dabbing some onto stubborn spots before I go to bed. It is also a staple in my natural cleaning products, keeping my home fresh and germ-free.

10. Bergamot

Bergamot oil, with its fresh, citrusy scent, is perfect for lifting my mood and reducing stress. I love diffusing it during high stress times; Bergamot is also great for the skin, helping to balance oil production, reduce inflammation and it can act as a mild analgesic. I like to use it in muscle rubs and skincare blends!
